Our Process
My breast milk has high lipase, and my infant refuses frozen milk. Will freeze-drying help?
Freeze-drying can be beneficial in many cases where milk tastes different after freezer storage. However, it is difficult to guarantee that the process will make the milk palatable again. This depends on the extent of lipase activity that has already occurred and the individual taste preferences of infants.
During freezer storage, the lipase enzyme remains active, but it is inactivated by the freeze-drying process. For mothers concerned about high lipase, freeze-drying can halt further lipase activity, although it cannot reverse any degradation that has already taken place. It is also important to note that if your infant refuses milk that was previously frozen, it does not necessarily indicate high lipase. The freeze/thaw process itself can alter the quality and taste of the milk.
Freeze-drying may help in this regard because the process allows water to transition directly from solid (ice) to gas (water vapour), bypassing the thawing stage and potentially preventing some changes associated with thawing. Overall, if your infant refuses your frozen milk, freeze-drying may be a viable option to consider.
How can I be sure that the breast milk powder I receive is my own?
The Milk Fairy receives your frozen milk and does an initial quality control check. Then, each bag of milk is recorded in our system and labelled with your name and order number. Each order is processed individually, ensuring focused attention on one order at a time.
I have a low breast milk supply. Is it possible for another mother to contribute?
Since we process each shipment as a single batch in one machine, we cannot accept shared contributions to ensure the safety and integrity of your own breast milk milk.
How long can my breast milk be stored in the freezer prior to freeze-drying?
From a safety standpoint, we recommend a maximum freezer storage time of 12 months. .
Regarding storage duration, it is best for nutrient retention to freeze-dry your milk sooner rather than later. However, if you are deciding whether to send older or newer milk from your freezer, sending the older milk will halt any further degradation, extending its shelf life. It is personal preference.
What if my breast milk is frozen in bottles?
How much powder will be sent back?
During the freeze-drying process, the weight of the milk is reduced by approximately 90%, as the only component removed is the water. When the correct amount of water is reintroduced to the powdered milk, the volume returns to its original pre-freeze-dried state.
For example, if you send in 1 litre of frozen milk, the resulting powder will reconstitute to 1 litre of milk once water is added.
The instructions provided on the back of the returned bags specify the exact amount of water required to restore the milk to its original consistency.
Will one sachet equal one feed?
We strive to keep the contents of the bags similar to what is sent in. For example, if you typically fill bags to 120ml, you will receive approximately the same amount in each returned sachet. However, if you would prefer to customise your feed size, we can discuss this – e.g. 200ml feeds.
